JUST A CLIMB AWAY: 5 MOUNTAINS TO CONQUER!
Just keep climbing!
You don’t need to be a *real* mountaineer to climb mountains. Head out of the city once in awhile and have a break with mother nature with these awesome newbie-friendly hikes.
Location: Nasugbu, Batangas
Hours to summit: 2-4 hours
With its rolling slopes, expansive grassland, and scenic view, Mt. Batulao offers a fresh sight to see to those who want escape Manila for a day.
Hours to crater: 45 minutes 4X4 ride plus 2.5 hours trek
Expect a vast landscape covered in lahar and boulders instead of lush greenery in climbing Mt. Pinatubo. But don’t worry, you’ll be treated to a stunning view of the crater lake at the end.
Location: Tanay, Rizal
Hours to summit: 2-3 hours
If you want to catch the sea of clouds without climbing the famous Mt. Pulag, then Mt. Maynoba is your next best option.
Location: Rodriguez, Rizal
Hours to summit: 1-2 hours
Not only it’s a favorite hiking place by hikers, Mt. Balagbag is also a favorite of mountain bikers. It is not as lush as other mountains but expect small waterfalls and rivers along the way.
Difficulty: 6/9 (North to South traverse)
Hours to summit: 2-4 hours to North Peak | 2-3 hours from North Peak to South Peak
Once famous as a mystical place inhibited by the god (or the fairy), Mt. Arayat is now a favorite hiking destination by locals and foreigners alike. Traversing Mt. Arayat from North to South is a challenge. Expect sharp descents, boulders, rocks, and roots to climb along the way.
Still unsure about it? Maybe a word from author David McCullough Jr. is all you need to hear: “Climb the mountain not to plant your flag, but to embrace the challenge, enjoy the air and behold the view. Climb it so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.”
